Rupesh stuns Chatwinder to romp into quarters

Wildcard Rupesh Roy continued his giant-killing run as he thrashed the finalist of the Chandigarh leg, Chatwinder Singh, in straight sets to romp into the boys' singles quarter-finals of the Bharat Petroleum ITF Junior world ranking tennis tournament in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Roy kept up the good work as he unleashed an aggressive brand of tennis to prevail over Chatwinder 6-4, 6-2, on a day which saw a number of seeded players bite the dust.

Unseeded Amit Inbar of Israel also caused a major upset, demolishing sixth seeded Divij Sharan of India with a facile 6-3, 6-1 victory to secure a berth in the quarter-finals.

Qualifier V M Ranjeet made further progress in the championship, ousting eighth seeded Tushar Liberhan of India with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 verdict in a closely-contested tussle which lasted nearly one-and-a-half hour.

In the girls' singles section, top seed Megha Vakaria of India, fourth seed Ariana Stefanie Maya Rose of Indonesia, fifth seed Nandita Chandrasekhar and sixth seed Krushmi Chheda (both India) were all toppled by their lesser-known rivals.

Boys' top seed Amanjot Singh of India, however, kept his reputation intact with an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over his Chinese opponent Guo Jie to move into the last eight stage.
