Air India romp into last four

SAI Centre, Bangalore and Air India, Mumbai registered fluent victories in the Lal Bahadur Shastri hockey tournaments in Delhi on Sunday.

In the first match of the day, SAI Centre, trailing 0-1, staged a strong fightback to beat BPCL 4-1, while Air India humbled Bangladesh XI 3-0 in a rather one-sided match.

BPCL drew first blood in the 24th minute through S Jeelani but two minutes later Avesh Ansari of SAI Centre equalised 1-1. At the lemon break the scores were level 1-1.

Two quick goals by Somanna in the 53rd and 55th minutes took the game away from BPCL as SAI Centre took a 3-1 lead. Hemant Gathe scored a brilliant field goal in the 59th minute sealed the fate of BPCL and was declared the man of the match.

In the second match, Air India whipped Bangladesh XI, as Devinder Kumar struck twice in the first half -- in
the 29th and 33rd minutes. At half time, Air India led 2-0.

In the second half, Bangladesh XI pressed hard but could not penetrate the solid defence of their opponents. Kishore Kumar scored through a penalty-corner in the 60th minute to put 3-0.

In Monday's semi-finals, Air India will clash with CISF while Indian Airlines will take on Bangladesh XI.
