United, Bayern, Inter head into Champions League
European giants Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan all swept into the lucrative group phase of the Champions League after convincing wins in the third qualifying round on Tuesday.
United, the 1999 winners, made up for their embarrassing 1-0 defeat by Zalaegerszeg in the first leg two weeks ago by hammering the Hungarian minnows 5-0 at Old Trafford.
Zalaegerszeg had goalkeeper Sasa Ilic dismissed in the 74th minute for a reckless challenge on Ruud van Nistelrooy, who scored twice.
United are set to lose midfielder Paul Scholes for two weeks after he was carried off with an ankle injury.
The 1968 European Cup winners now stand to earn up to 16 million Swiss francs ($10.68 million) from the first round alone and manager Alex Ferguson said: "That's where we want to be.
"This club's history is built on great European nights and we wanted to be there. And they've shown that tonight."
Bayern, who won the 2001 Champions League and three European Cups from 1974-76, secured a 3-1 win over Partizan Belgrade and a comfortable 6-1 aggregate victory.
"The team knew this was an important match," said Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.
Michael Ballack, Brazilian striker Elber and Hasan Salihamidzic (penalty) scored the goals that ensured the Bundesliga club's place in Thursday's draw.
RECOBA STRIKES
Uruguay's Alvaro Recoba scored one and made the other as Inter ran out 2-0 winners over Sporting Lisbon at the San Siro, following a goalless draw in the first leg.
Luigi Di Biagio nodded home a Recoba corner and the Uruguayan followed up with a glancing header before the break to put the result beyond doubt.
The victory was a welcome diversion for Inter fans after weeks of speculation over the future at the club of Brazil's World Cup-winning striker Ronaldo.
It was also a far cry from the humiliating exit which Inter made at the hands of Swedish side Helsingborg at this stage of the competition two years ago.
UEFA Cup holders Feyenoord booked their place in the money-spinning first group phase thanks to Japan's Shinji Ono, who scored in their 2-0 win over Fenerbahce.
Ono also bagged the only goal when the two sides met in the first leg.
Genk were beaten 4-2 on the night at Sparta Prague but went through on the away goals rule after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.
Ono's team mate at the World Cup, Junichi Inamoto, fired a hat-trick as his new club Fulham beat Bologna 3-1 (5-3 on aggregate) in their Intertoto Cup final to secure a place in Friday's UEFA Cup first round draw.
Malaga and VfB Stuttgart also went through.
