Abhinn wins BPL-Asian Satellite

Top seed Abhinn Shyam Gupta lived up to his top billing, beating fourth seed Jarkrapan Thanathiratham of Thailand 15-4, 6-15, 15-4 in the final to win the men’s singles title in the $5000 BPL-Asian Satellite badminton tournament at the Bombay Gymkhana, in Mumbai, on Sunday.

In the women’s singles final, India’s top-ranked player Aparna Popat, who was the top seed, went down fighting to 18-year-old, second seed Salakjit Polsana of Thailand 7-11, 11-8, 5-11 in a little under an hour.

Salakjit Polsana (L) and Abhinn Shyam Gupta Both the finals were highly competitive. In women’s final, Popat gave away too many negative points and paid dearly for it, while in the men’s final, Gupta kept changing tactics and held his nerve till the end to emerge triumphant.

Jeremy Gan Wye Teck and James Gan tek Cha of Malaysia beat Ng Kean Kok and Tan Bin Shen, also of Malaysia, 15-13, 15-5 to win the men's doubles title.
