Montgomery upsets favourites in Zurich 100m showdown
American sprinter Tim Montgomery delivered an unexpected win in the men's 100 metres at the Zurich Golden League meeting on Friday after outpacing pre-race favourites Maurice Greene and Dwain Chambers.
Olympic and world champion Greene and newly-crowned European champion Chambers of Britain were both overshadowed as Montgomery crossed the line first in 9.98 seconds.
Another American, Coby Miller, finished second in 10.00 with Chambers third in 10.05.
Greene trailed in fifth in 10.10 seconds, behind fourth-placed Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis who clocked 10.06.
"They ran a good race and I ran a bad one," said Greene afterwards. "It was their day and it is as simple as that."
Greene had returned to action after a three-week break and was keen to continue his winning streak from the previous Golden League meetings in Paris, Rome and Monte Carlo.
But on a sultry night on Friday he was unable to cope with his rivals.
The two heats had halved an original entry of 16 runners and removed several well-known competitors, but the final proved to be no quicker than either heat.
The second heat saw Montgomery, clearly in form, win in 9.93 seconds with Chambers runner-up in a personal best of 9.94.
