Netherlands too strong for India

The Indian junior girls went down tamely to the top seed Netherlands in their second match at the 12th World junior tennis finals being played at Prostejov Tennis Club, in the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

In Group 1, India lost to the Netherlands 0-3. No. 2 seed Bibiane Schoofs won the first match against Tara Iyer 6-4, 6-1 in the blustery conditions to put her team ahead.

Michaela Krajicek then stepped up the pace for the Netherlands making light work of Sanaa Bhambri, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the second singles rubber. The number one seeds then went on to consolidate their singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the doubles rubber to win the tie.

Earlier on Monday, India had shocked seventh seed Spain 2-1. India lost the first rubber when Tara Iyer went down to Carla Suarez 6-7(3), 4-6.

India were able to regain their composure after the first rubber, stepping up a gear to win the second singles rubber, when Sanaa Bhambri upset Mayte Gabarrus 7-5, 6-2.

Sanaa and Tara then defeated E.Compostizo and C.Suarez 6-3, 6-2 in the crucial doubles rubber.

In the boys section, the Group 1 match between eight seed India and Belgium was delayed due to rain on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday they defeated Colombia 2-1 on Monday. Mathivanan Jeevan defeated Thomas Estrada 6-1, 6-4 in the first rubber. But the India No 1 Rupesh Roy lost to Francisco Franco 6-3, 1-6, 5-7.

S Gupta and Rupesh Roy then defeated F Franco and T Estrada 7-6(10), 5-7, 8-6 to win the tie for India.
