Haas edges past Norman in Indianapolis

Tommy Haas edged past Sweden's Magnus Norman to reach the third round of the Indianapolis Open on Tuesday, on a day in which play was twice suspended due to heavy rain showers.
The third seeded German won 7-6 6-3, with his victory coming only after he saved a set point in the tiebreak and claimed just a single break of serve in the second set.
Haas, who missed Wimbledon after his parents were injured in a motorcycle accident, has a lingering shoulder injury, which did not seem to affect him as he often blasted the ball past Norman and sent down 11 aces.
"I thought the time I took off with my parents would help," he said. "It's tough. I'm sick and tired of taking MRIs. There are no tears, but the tendon has a bit of fluid in there. Some days are pretty good and some days it hurts pretty bad again.
"I need to take a break, but at the same time I need matches because I have not played much the last couple of months and I want to prepare myself as much as I can for the US Open."
In the only other second round match played on Tuesday, sixth-seeded Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean rallied to beat Sargis Sargsian 3-6 6-3 6-3.
In first round matches, the rain delays meant that Lionel Roux took nearly six hours to complete a 7-5 5-7 6-3 win over Feliciano Lopez. The actual playing time for the match was two hours 12 minutes.
In seeded action, 10th seed Max Mirnyi fired 17 aces as he dismissed young Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2 7-5, and 15th seeded Arnaud Clement earned a 6-4 7-5 win over Jonas Bjorkman.
Taylor Dent from the United States beat compatriot Glenn Weiner 6-4 7-6, while Spain's Felix Mantilla comfortably accounted for Ivo Heuberger of Switzerland.
Nicolas Massu, Wayne Ferreira, Francisco Clavet, Alexander Popp and Mario Ancic all also had first round victories.
