4x400 women's relay team
wins lone gold

India ended its campaign in the 14th Asian Athletics Championships with a lone gold medal coming on the concluding day, in Colombo, on Monday.

The women's 4x400 metres quartet of Sagardeep Kaur, Soma Biswas, Sunita Dahiya and J J Shobha beat back a strong challenge from Japan and Sri Lanka respectively to win the race in 3:37.51 seconds.

Japan clocked 3:38.29 seconds while the hosts timed 3:43.71 seconds.

The day also saw India win a silver in the men's 4x400 relay. The team of Anil Kumar Rohil, Satbir Singh, K Suresh and Jata Shankar Mishra clocked 3:06.76 seconds, finishing behind Sri Lanka, who clocked 3: 03.35 seconds. Japan were third in 3:07.09 seconds.

India's final medal tally read: one gold, five silver and four bronze.

Olympic and World Championship medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe won women's 200 metres final to complete a golden sprint double.

Jayasinghe, who won women's 100 metres gold, clocking 11.29 seconds, on Saturday, ran another great race to clock 22.84 seconds and win the 200 metres gold as well. Her timing equalled the Asian Championship record, set by compatriot Damayanthi Darsha in Jakarta two years ago.

Perepolove Lyubov of Uzbekistan was second in 23.76 seconds while China's Yan Jiankui won the bronze with a timing of 23.85 seconds.

Chernovol Gennadly of Kazakhstan won the men's 200 metres, clocking 20.73 seconds. Alshammari Fawsi of Kuwait took the silver in 20.92 seconds while Suwonpratheep Sittichai of Thailand took the bronze in 21.04 seconds.

India's Anand Menezes did well to finish fifth with a timing of 21.32 seconds in a field of eight runners.
