Adams believes Man Utd have right credentials for glory
Former Arsenal and England central defender Tony Adams believes that Manchester United have the motivation and squad most capable of winning next season's premier league title.
One day after Adams announced his retirement from football, he wrote in Sunday's Observer newspaper that winning nothing last season would be the spur Alex Ferguson's team needed to win the title.
"Last season United ultimately felt the effects of a poor start," he wrote.
"It is unlikely to be allowed to happen again and they have the depth of squad to enable them to rest key players in midwinter.
"Above all, after winning nothing last term, Sir Alex will have instilled in them a new fear and determination.
"I know that to be a powerful cocktail from my own experiences of fruitless seasons. It is one I expect to be too powerful for their rivals."
Adams also feels that the signing of Rio Ferdinand will give Manchester United the solidity and drive at the back that will enable them to finish ahead of defending champions Arsenal and last season's runners-up, Liverpool.
"For me Steve Bruce was always the driver from the back for Manchester United and this is where Rio Ferdinand comes in," he said.
"Sir Alex simply saw that he had a gap and went out and bought the best available.
"Though I believe (Arsenal's) Sol Campbell to be a better defender, Rio has a talent for passing the ball and will enjoy the freedom of being allowed to distribute at Old Trafford.
"He also has a determined streak and takes responsibility for a defence, which will sit well with his team mates."
Adams also expects captain Roy Keane to assist Ferguson to help Ferdinand understand what is expected of him at the club.
The former England captain acknowledged that repeating success is harder than achieving it the first time round and for that reason, Arsenal could struggle to retain their title.
Adams expects the north London side to improve on their poor record in the Champions League and the commitment to success in European competition could harm their domestic chances.
He also noted that Liverpool's tendency to "lose silly games" would be their downfall and predicted Leeds United -- under new manager Terry Venables -- to emerge as Manchester United's main challengers.
