India to host WTA tour event next year

India will host a $140,000 WTA tour event early next year, to be promoted by a sports management company run by top doubles player Mahesh Bhupathi and his father, Krishna.

"The event is planned for the third week of February," Krishna Bhupathi told Reuters on Wednesday from Bangalore.

Bangalore, which has organised the ATP World doubles event for the last two years, is in the running to host the event organised by the Bhupathis' company, Globosport.

A WTA tour supervisor inspected the facilities in Bangalore on Tuesday, a release from the regional Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) said.

Hyderabad and New Delhi will also be visited later this week before the venue for India's first WTA tour event is finalised, it said.

"A couple" of players in the world top 10 were seriously considering contesting the event, the release added.

India also hosts a $400,000 ATP event in Madras.
