Tanya nets Jr world
golf Grand Slam
Indian child golfing prodigy Tanya Wadhwa became the first ever golfer to complete a Grand Slam of title wins in junior world golf history.
The nine-year-old achieved the feat with a resounding seven-stroke win at the US Kids Junior Golf Championship, staged in Virginia, on August 2-3, 2002.
According to reports, Tanya also won the longest-drive category, with a 180-yard effort, off the tee and the chipping
competition.
Her earlier two wins came at the Doral Golf Resort, Miami, in December 2001, and at the World Junior Championship at San Diego a fortnight ago.
The above two tournaments along with the US Kids Junior Golf Championship form the Grand Slam in junior world golf.
Tanya, who participated in the nine years and under age category, was aided
by scores of 31 and 29, which helped her tally an impressive 12-under 60.
Danielle Frazer of California finished second at five-under 67.
The tournament was played over two days, with the participants playing
nine-holes of par-36 each day.
Over 700 participants from all over the United States attempted to qualify for the prestigious tournament, with only
the crème making it to the final draw. Among the other qualifiers were
Cheryl Woods, niece of Tiger Woods.
The impressive showing earned Tanya a commercial, which will be telecast nation-wide
on America's premium golf slot - 'The Golf Channel', and the honour of holding aloft the Indian tri-colour.
