Hingis announces return to action

Martina Hingis will return to the WTA Tour next week nearly three months after having surgery on her left ankle.

Hingis's management firm Octagon announced on Monday that the former world number one would compete in the Rogers AT&T Canada Cup, which starts on August 12, and the Pilot Pen Tennis event in New Haven a week later.

The 21-year-old Swiss has also requested a wildcard entry into the U.S. Open the following week.

Hingis had surgery on May 20 to repair ligament damage and was expected to be out for about four months, but has made a fast recovery.

The five-times grand slam champion missed the French Open and Wimbledon this year but won titles in two of her first three appearances in 2002, increasing her career total to 40.
