Bayern spoil Madrid's centenary party
Bayern Munich survived a late Real Madrid fightback to clinch a 2-1 victory in the final of the Spanish side's pre-season centenary tournament at the Bernabeu on Sunday.
Michael Ballack converted a penalty on 27 minutes to open the scoring and Hasan Salihamidzic doubled the Bayern lead with a stunning goal midway through the second.
The Bosnian forward broke from midfield and exchanged passed with Claudio Pizarro before beating Real keeper Cesar with a deft finish.
Luis Figo struck with a penalty six minutes from time but Real could not force an equaliser and Bayern completed a deserved win in a match between the European champions of the past two seasons.
Real, who reached the final with a 2-0 stroll past Liverpool on Friday, once again started with an under-strength side, pinning their faith on the attacking strengths of Zinedine Zidane and Figo.
The past and present world players of the year showed flashes of brilliance but Bayern looked stronger from the start and Salihamidzic came close on seven minutes with a header that grazed the bar.
As Bayern pushed forward Michel Salgado blocked a Ballack shot with his hand in the area. The German midfielder took the spotkick himself to give the visitors the lead.
The introduction of Raul for the second half gave Real more verve in attack but Oliver Kahn's goal was rarely threatened and it was no great surprise when Bayern got the second with Salihamidzic's spectacular run and shot.
Figo and Roberto Carlos both created shooting opportunities as Real pushed to get back in the game before Fernando Morientes, another substitute, won a penalty late on.
Figo stroked in the penalty and Real poured forward for the remainder of the game. Bayern kept their heads, though, to make it two wins out of two in the tournament, following their 2-1 victory over AC Milan the previous night.
Earlier on Sunday, Liverpool beat Milan 2-1 to win the consolation match and claim third place in the competition.
