Grapplers boost medals tally

Indian grapplers on Saturday further boosted the country's overall medals tally by bagging three gold and one silver medal in the wrestling event of the 17th Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

Krishan Kumar set the tempo by clinching the top spot in the up to 55 kg category while Ramesh Kumar claimed his moment of glory by defeating his Canadian opponent by a 3-2 margin in the up to 66 kg category.

In the up to 84 kg category, Anuj Kumar had to be content with the silver medal failing to get the better of his Canadian rival Nicholas Agoalah. Both the grapplers were tied at 1-1 after the regulation time but the Canadian tilted the scale in his favour in the extra time.

Palwinder Singh Cheema had no difficulty in brushing aside the challenge of his Canadian opponent K Koester with a convincing 10-0 margin to fetch the third gold for the country in the up to 120 kg category.

India now have won 34 gold, 20 silver and 16 bronze medals.
