Tollygunge rout Mohd. Sporting

Leaving behind their opening match reverse, Tollygunge Aggragami on Wednesday bounced back to blank Mohammedan Sporting 4-0 and stay in contention for a last eight spot in the IFA Shield football tournament in Calcutta.

In another match, Vietnam's Nam Dinh prevailed over India under-19 3-1.

Nam Dinh, who had gone down 1-3 to Bangladeshi outfit Mukti Joddha in its tournament opener, gave an improved performance, opening up a 2-0 lead by the breather.

Experienced striker Nguyen Phuc, who donned national colours in the just-concluded SEA Games and World Cup qualifiers, netted in the 13th and 37th minutes of the Group C pre-quarter final encounter.

Crossing over, Nam Dinh again scored in the 59th minute as Vu Duy Hoang found the target, before the Indian teenagers reduced the margin three minutes from time through M Fernandes against the run of play.

Tollygunge, who had lost 1-4 to title holders and NFL champions East Bengal on Monday, seemed a determined lot as they scored twice in each half in the Group A pre-quarter final tie.

Kenyan Moses Owira struck a brace, while Adeola Adeyeri and Sasthi Duley scored apiece each to enable their team gain full points in the lacklustre match at the Salt Lake stadium.

Dominating the proceedings from the beginning, Tollygugne went ahead in the 10th mintue when Adeyeri shot home from inside the box following a Mehtab Hossain centre.

The winners maintained the pressure and again struck in the 31st minute. Akeem Aboloni essayed a centre from the left flank for fellow striker Moses, who lost no time in heading the ball in.

The scoreline became 3-0 in the 79th minute as the nippy Duley succesfully capitalised on a Sporting defensive lapse. Sporting defender Insan Ali backpassed to custodian Imran Khan, who tried to return the ball to Ali, but the opportunistic Duley intercepted the ball and placed in.

Moses wrapped up the proceedings in spectacular fashion in the dying minutes by unleashing a snap 25-yarder which entered the goal, taking everybody by surprise.

The result throws the group wide open, and one has to wait for the crucial concluding group match between Mohammedan Sporting and East Bengal on September 28 to know the two quarter-finalists.
