Humpy wins First Saturday title

Indian Woman Grandmaster Koneru· Humpy drew her 11th and last round match against GM Todorovic Goran of Yugoslavia on Wednesday to win the First Saturday Grandmasters tournament, in Budapest, Hungary.

With draws in her last two rounds, the 14-year-old World junior champion aggregated 7.5 points but narrowly missed out on her second men's Grandmaster's norm. However, she went on to improve her Elo rating considerably.

International Master Peter Horvath and IM Jakab Attila were joint second.

Humpy, who is sponsored by Bank of Baroda, is leaving for Belgrade to participate in Third Saturday Chess tournament, starting from October.20.

Earlier, in the tenth round on Tuesday, she missed the chance of earning her second men's Grandmaster's norm after being forced to settle for a draw against IM Jakab Attile of Hungary.

Playing with black, she opened with Nimza Indian defence, which she later transformed into Carokann defence. However, the Vijayawada girl, after a tough fight, agreed to split the point after the 41st move.

Humpy needed to win her last two rounds to reach 8.5 points and earn her second men's GM norm.
