Moya wins Croatia Open

Top seed Carlos Moya of Spain beat Frenchman Jerome Golmard 6-4 3-6 7-6 to win the Croatia Open tournament on Sunday, 22nd July.

Moya struggled in the second and third set but regained his strength in the tie-break, allowing the Frenchman, who appeared to be suffering a sore back and foot, only two points.

Carlos Moya Moya, a favourite with the home crowd who also won the tournament in 1996, took the first set almost effortlessly, breaking Golmard's serve in the opening game and holding on to his lead.

The roles were reversed in the second set, where the left-handed Frenchman was on top, winning three times on Moya's serve.

Each player held on to his serve in the decisive set, with Moya, who changed his shirt from white to black, barely managing to keep his serve until the last few games.

Golmard failed to convert a break point at 5-5 but still managed to level for 6-6, sending the set to a tie-break.

However, his game collapsed from then on, as Moya appeared fresher and stronger, while Golmard moved with some difficulty. He conceded the match after finding the net on Moya's serve.
