Anand goes down yet again

World Champion Viswanathan Anand suffered yet another setback in the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess tournament when he went down to Grandmaster Alexander Morozevich of Russia in the sixth round on Wednesday.

With this defeat, his first at the hands of Morozevich, Anand has been relegated to the 5-6 position which he shares with GM Michael Adams of England with two points apiece.

Anand struggled to find his form yet again against the enterprising Morozevich in the of the Chelyabinsk variation of the Semi Slav defense.

The opening was fought fiercely and Anand appeared on top. However, a pawn sacrifice that shattered his king's position cost him dear and Morozevich staked his claim in the game with counterattack on the queen side.

Earlier, both had castled on the opposite flanks to launch an attack against the king. Anand, who played white made a vital mistake in the final stages of the game when he got the queens traded.

After that, Morozevich's rooks created havoc on the open Queen Bishop file.

Anand called it a day in a mere 28 moves giving Morozevich his second successive victory in the tournament.

Vladimir Kramnik of Russia maintained his position at the top of the tables with a hard fought draw with GM Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria.

Kramnik tried hard to break through the Benoni defence of Topalov but eventually settled for a draw after trading a few pieces in the middlegame.

Kramnik has 4 points in his kitty after six rounds and is followed by GM Peter Leko of Hungary and Topalov with 3.5 points apiece. Morozevich is on fourth position with three points.

A similar result was achieved by Leko who salvaged an inferior position against Adams.
