Williams wins the Wimbledon title

Venus Williams, who came into the match as a firm favourite after her victory over Davenport in the semi-finals did not disappoint and won the match and the title with relative ease, whitwhashing Henin in the final set 6-0.

Henin, who had captured the hearts of tennis-goers with her flowing strokes tried her very best and made Wiliams fight for every point in the secong set which she eventually won. But once Williams moved into top gear there was little the Belgian could do.

Williams opened the match with two double-faults but not too much went wrong after that point as she took the first game and later the set with Henin holding her serve only once in commanding fashion, 6-1.

The second set started in slightly different fashion with Henin overcoming her nervousness and finally began to get her range of shots and the defending champion was made to work hard for every point.

At 2-3 in the second set there was a 15 minute delay due to rain. The two came back to continue and it seemed as if Henin might make a match of it as she took the second set with a crucial break at 5-3. The two finalists were now tied one set each.

At the start of the third set every person in the audience was expecting a battle royale. What happened was completely the opposite. Williams just stepped into top gear and Henin was broken each time she served. Her Wimbledon dream was over but we will see a lot more of the young Belgian who had recently also reached the semi-final of the French Open.

The entire match lasted an hour and eight minutes.

The men's final between Goran Ivanisevic and Patrick Rafter will take place on Monday, July 9.
