Magnus Norman for Gold Flake Open

Magnus Norman of Sweden, ranked fourth in the world, has confirmed participation in the Gold Flake Open, scheduled in Chennai from January 1 to 7, 2001.

The 24-year-old, who has 586 ATP points to his name, has won four titles, besides reaching his first Grand Slam final, the French Open in Paris, where he lost to Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil, who heads the world rankings with 645 points. Marat Safin (Rus-639) and Pete Sampras (637) are second and third respectively in the world rankings.

Norman, who lives in Monte Carlo and is coached by Fredrik Rosengren, said: "I am happy to visit Chennai again. It is nice to be considered a star. It shows that you have been playing good tennis and people start to recognise you."

Tournament director Sheila Maniam said: "Norman is in a hurry and we are delighted he has decided to return to Chennai for the Gold Flake Open. He has played in the tournament before, in the days when he was not quite a big name like what he is today."

The Gold Flake Open is being held for the fifth successive year.
