Garcia keeps lead in World Challenge tournament

Sergio Garcia of Spain shot an eight-under-par 64 to maintain his lead after two rounds of the 12-man Williams World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club.

Sergio Garcia Garcia, who set the course record in the first round with a 65 and then bettered it by a stroke in the second, took a two-stroke lead but wound up sharing the best-round notation in the country club's record book with Davis Love and Tiger Woods, who also shot 64.

"I got out to a good start," Garcia said. "I was thinking I could par the last three, but then I saw the scoreboard."

On that board were Woods and Love trying to make up ground. "They were making birdie after birdie and I just wanted to keep up," Garcia said. "It was a great round for all three of us."

Love stood two strokes back and Woods three. They were the only golfers with a realistic chance to challenge Garcia for the $1 million first prize.

Next closest were Fred Couples and defending champion Tom Lehman -- 11 shots behind Garcia.

Woods started off poorly, hitting the ball out of bounds on the second hole. It was the first time he has done that since Hilton Head in April of 1999.

He rebounded from the resulting bogey to shoot 3-under on the front nine and then convert three birdies and an eagle on the back nine.

"I've never been one of those guys who makes one birdie and then three holes later makes another," Woods said. "I am pretty streaky."

Love has had a streak of his own but it is not a good one: he has not won since April 1998. He would be glad of a victory here even though it is not an official PGA Tour event.

"A win's a win," Love said. "This is an exciting tournament to win and would give you a lot of momentum going into next year."
