Paes, Bhupathi win Wimbledon doubles title

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi lived up to their top-seed ranking and created history by becoming the first Indians to win a senior title at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

Paes and Bhupathi overcame the eighth-seeded Dutch-American pairing of Paul Haarhuis and Jared Palmer in four sets, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 on Court No 1 to take the men's doubles title.

The Indians lost the first set via the tie-break, 10-12, with neither pair being able to break the other in their service games.

But then Paes and Bhupathi won the next two sets fairly comfortably, breaking their opponents once in each set, before Haarhuis and Palmer took them again to the tie-breaker in the fourth set. This time, however, the Indians prevailed 7-4.

The victory at Wimbledon comes on the heels of Paes and Bhupathi's win at the French Open last month. The duo had also made it to the final of the Australian Open earlier this year.
