Windies forced to follow on

New Zealand had the West Indies in deep trouble by close of play on the third day of the second cricket Test at Wellington today.

After declaring their first innings at 518 for 9, they bowled out the tourists for 179 and forced them to folow-on 399 runs behind.

The West Indies lost their last four wickets first innings wickets for five runs in the final hour before being bowled out.

At stumps they were two for no loss in their second innings.

Chris Cairns, who has been the pick of the bowlers in the series, bagged five wickets for 44.

One of the latter Windies wickets to fall was a run-out off a no-ball.

Earlier, a partnership of 112 between Adrian Griffith and Brian Lara enabled the West Indies recover from 17 for three. But once Lara was out for 67 just before tea, wickets kept falling.

Jimmy Adams went in the first over after tea when he pushed one from Daniel Vettori to Gary Stead at short-forward square.

Stead then missed a hard chance off the new batsman Ridley Jacobs in the next Vettori over with the batsman yet to get off his mark.

Adrian Griffith, who had been a spectator at the other end while wickets were falling fast after Lara's dismissal, went for 67 at 174, caught behind by Adam Parore off Dion Nash.

Franklyn Rose faced two balls before edging to Parore off Cairns and Reon King was run out the next ball off a Cairns no-ball.

King hit the ball square of the wicket on the off side and started down the pitch. Vettori threw down the wicket to strand King well short.

Courtney Walsh lasted a short time before he became Cairns's fifth victim for no score, leaving Jacobs not out on 19.
