A countrywide survey conducted by ABP News and Nielsen spells doom for the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance. If Lok Sabha polls were held right now, says the survey, the UPA will win only 136 of the 543 seats in the Lower House.
The coalition had won 262 seats in the general election held in 2009. The Congress party alone had won 209 seats.

The survey gives the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance a reason to smile, as it states that the opposition coalition will manage to win as many as 206 Lok Sabha seats.
The NDA had won only 159 seats in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
But the coalition will still need the support of 66 more Lok Sabha members to form the government, says the survey.

Left parties, which has already suffered defeats in the strongholds of Kerala and West Bengal, will improve marginally, says the survey. They will win 34 seats in the election.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's popularity will help the NDA win 80 seats in the west zone, while the Congress will win only 36 seats there, says the survey.
NDA will perform better in both east and north India, winning 49 and 67 seats respectively, while the UPA will get 33 and 36 seats in the two zones.
Regional parties will dominate in south India, winning as many as 75 seats there, says the survey.

Interestingly, though the NDA is likely to perform better than the UPA, its vote share would be just marginally better at 27 per cent as compared to the ruling coalition's vote share of 26 per cent.
The Left Front will only get six percent of the votes, while other parties will get 41 per cent of the vote share.
According to the survey, 31 per cent of the people surveyed are willing to vote for the BJP while only 20 per cent want to vote for the Congress.

The Congress will lose 26 per cent of its voters; nine per cent of them are likely to vote for the BJP.
The BJP is likely to fare way better in holding on to its voters.
If Lok Sabha polls were held today, 90 per cent of BJP's voters would vote for the party and only two per cent will switch their loyalties to the Congress.
