UP assembly okays resolution to DIVIDE the state

Taking full advantage of the uproar created by the opposition, the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party managed to get the much debated resolution for division of Uttar Pradesh into four smaller states conveniently passed by voice vote in the state assembly on Monday.

Interestingly, Assembly Speaker Sukhdeo Rajhbhar also declared sine die adjournment of the house barely an hour after the house sat for what was stated to be the commencement  of the winter session of Uttar Pradesh state assembly.

Stormy scenes were witnessed in the house, no sooner than the house sat for the day. Terming the government as 'most corrupt', members of the opposition in both houses went on raising slogans against the Mayawati regime.

Within minutes of the commencement of the session at 11 am, almost the entire opposition rose up to unanimously raise the demand for ouster of the Mayawati government, which led speaker Sukhdeo Rajbhar to adjourn the proceedings for an hour.

No sooner than the house re-assembled at 12.20 pm, the opposition once again resorted to slogan shouting, that came in handy for Chief Minister Mayawati to herself table the resolution.

She quickly read out the brief and crisp resolution seeking division of UP into four states -- Purvanchal, Paschim Pradesh, Avadh Pradesh and Bundelkhand -- and within the next two minutes, the speaker got it passed by voice vote, which again remained inaudible in the din and noise that prevailed in the house.

What followed was another resolution by Parliamentary Affairs minister Lalji Verma who against used the unusual fast-track to get two other key resolutions passed by the house.

Firstly, it was the vote on account, whereby the government managed to get the legislature's nod for the proposed expenditures for the remaining part of the financial year 2011-12.

No sooner that was done, within seconds came the resolution for sine die adjournment of the house, which was passed with equally unprecedented rapidity.
