What unfolded in a wetland within the periphery of Guwahati on Monday was unprecedented -- a large number of people dived into the water body in a mad rush to get hold of currency notes floating in it. Anurag Kashyap reports.

It all started in the morning hours when a group of fishermen found some currency notes in the denomination of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 at Silsako beel at Sasal area, while they were out fishing there.

As soon as the news spread, a large number of people, including teenagers and even some young women jumped into the wetland to get their hands on the currency notes, if any.

In the process, a sizeable number of them emerged successful in laying their hands on currency notes of high denominations floating in the water body.

As local TV channels started beaming pictures of the mad rush, a large number of people rushed to the area to witness the development, creating congestion on the road even as police started an investigation.

The police quizzed some of those who claimed to have got hold of currency notes in the wetland. However, they have no clue so far as to how such a large number of notes found their way to the wetland that is located near city's Ginger Hotel.

The total amount of money recovered by people from the wetland is unknown. Some have claimed to have become richer by Rs 15,000 or so.
