In the second suicide strike in the heavily fortified city of Kabul in the last 10 days, a suicide bomber killed at least 10 people, nine of them foreigners in an early-morning attack on a highway leading to the international airport, officials have said.

A senior police source said nine of those killed were foreigners working for an international courier company. Another official said that it was a suicide attack next to a minivan that was carrying foreigners.

Witnesses said there was smoke spewing into the sky and a heavy police deployment at the scene of the attack. Video footage of the aftermath showed a charred vehicle smoldering on the road with bodies strewn about.

Tuesday's attack came after a devastating few days for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, in which six of its soldiers were shot dead by suspected Afghan police. The Taliban had destroyed six American fighter jets in an assault of a major base in the south after eight women were killed in one of the air strikes.

According to sources, Afghan insurgent group Hezb-e-Islami has claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, and said it was launched in retaliation for an anti-Islam film.
