Photos: Killer tornadoes rip through US, kill 29

On Sunday night, parts of United States were flattened after tornadoes reduced homes to rubble and flipped vehicles over on highways. The storm, which barreled through Alabama and Mississippi, killed nine people and brought the overall death toll to 29 in the country.

The roaring winds ripped apart the electric poles in the area, leaving thousands of people in Alabama, Kentucky and Mississippi without electricity.  Many have opted to hunker down in basements and shelters as the National Weather Service issued warnings for more tornadoes.

Officials said that the weather storms had killed at least 15 in Arkansas and one person in Oklahoma and one in Iowa on Sunday. Six people died in Winston County, Mississippi. Authorities also added that they were still looking for people and trying to sift through all the rubble, caused by the destruction. People affected by the storm wailed as they complained that they had lost all their belongings.

The White House issued a statement in which President Barack Obama promised that the federal government would help in the recovery and praised the heroic efforts of first-responders and neighbours. "Your country will be there to help you recover and rebuild as long as it takes," Obama said.

The storm system is hitting on the third anniversary of one of the worst tornado outbreaks in US history, which killed more than 300 people and included nearly 300 reported tornadoes across the nation's southeast.
