US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron embrace after a toast during the State Dinner at the White House in Washington

British Prime Minister David Cameron has revealed that United States President Barack Obama 'tucked him up in bed' while he was on board Air Force One during his recent trip to America.

The 45-year-old said that the President let him sleep in his day bed on the lavishly appointed aircraft as the pair flew back to Washington after watching a basketball match together last week.

The revelations came as Cameron admitted he was overawed by the red carpet treatment laid on by the White House during his visit to Washington with wife Samantha.

Speaking at a business awards ceremony in his Oxfordshire constituency, Cameron said he got special treatment after he and Obama had conducted a high-profile photo opportunity in Ohio.

"On the way back, it was about four o'clock in the morning UK time, so he said, "David, why don't you use my bed and put your feet up"," the Daily Mail quoted Cameron as saying.

"So I duly did and Barack went to the back of the plane and explained to my private secretary and the team.

"He said, "Don't worry, the British prime minister is fine, I have just tucked him up in bed". I don't think that has happened before," he said.

The prime minister's decision to reveal further details of his 'bromance' with the President led to raised eyebrows in Westminster.

It followed scenes last week of Obama and Cameron eating hot dogs together and referring to each other in their speeches as 'Barack' and 'David'.

Tory MPs have privately branded the behaviour 'nauseating' and compared it to the over familiarity between George W. Bush and Tony Blair, which was laid bare when the former US President addressed his leading ally as 'Yo! Blair' at an international summit.

In his speech, the prime minister also compared his relationship with Obama to those Sir Winston Churchill and Baroness Thatcher enjoyed with their American counterparts.

"The prime minister is plumbing new depths. Whatever you say about any of his predecessors, can you imagine Margaret Thatcher or Winston Churchill behaving  like this? We all know how star-struck he was about meeting President Obama but this is just embarrassing," said Ian Austin, Labour Member of Parliament.

"Cameron is only in the job to say "look at me everybody". He sounds bizarre, vain and out of touch. It is frankly demeaning," Michael Dugher, another Labour MP, added.
