Sadly, Padma Shri T S Satyan (1923-2009), one of the most eminent and earliest photojournalists in the country, doesn't find an entry in Wikipedia. But his never-seen-before compositions, powered by his supreme aesthetic sense, etch into the hearts of his many fans across the globe.
Born and educated in Mysore, T S Satyen largely worked as a freelancer, with his images being regularly published in the Illustrated Weekly of India, Life, Time, India Today, Outlook, Deccan Herald and Newsweek.
To mark the International Year of the Child in 1979, UNICEF sponsored his exhibition of photographs at the United Nations headquarters in New York. His published books include Exploring Karnataka, Hampi -- the Fabled Capital of the Vijaynagar Empire, In Love with Life, Kalakke Kannada, his memoirs in Kannada, and Alive and Clicking.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1977.
"My people are not the rich and the famous. They are the simple, ordinary folk. They do not hit the headlines, yet my people are people who matter," T S Satyan had said.
