Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh has lashed out at Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, accusing him of trying to evoke Muslim sentiments on the controversial Babri Masjid demolition issue, to garner votes.
Addressing a public rally in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, Singh said, "The Babri Masjid was demolished by Kalyan Singh, then why did Mulayam Singh Yadav fight the elections with him? Mulayamji has never answered this question. I always raised this issue. Mulyamji has never spoken against the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh). I think they have kept a door open to get in to coalition with the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) to form a government".

During his campaign, Mulayam Singh Yadav had reiterated that Babri Masjid existed in Ayodhya while Hindus never treated the place as holy.
Singh further said that the BJP had turned a blind eye to corruption in states such as Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Punjab, which it rules.

"The senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party took an anti- corruption rally all over India but he never spoke a word about the chief minister of Karnataka and Uttarakhand chief minister who were found guilty of corruption charges. He himself had removed both the chief ministers from power after accepting that they were guilty of corruption," said Singh.
Uttar Pradesh will elect a new 403-member state assembly in March, and the poll results are expected to broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections.
