"The policemen were immediately rushed to the hospital were they succumbed to their injuries," a senior police officer said.

The fatal attack came less than 24 hours after a sudden cordon and search operation was conducted at adjacent Lal Chowk. Senior officials had termed it as a "routine security drill".

Today's attack comes ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's two-day visit to the valley next week as well as the annual pilgrimage to the cave shrine of Amarnath which is scheduled to start on June 27.
