A Dutch man heading to Kuala Lumpur on a vacation on the flight MH17, which was shot down in Ukraine on Thursday, posted an image of the Malaysian Airlines aircraft on his Facebook page.

His sarcastic post now seems just eerie. “If the plane disappears, this is what it looks like,” wrote Cor Pan in reference to another Malaysian Airlines flight, MH370, which vanished on March 8 with 239 passengers and crew on board.

The photo is tagged "near Schiphol airport" at Amsterdam and appears to have been taken from the gate before Pan along with his girlfriend Neeltje To boarded the flight.

Around seven hours after posting the message, news broke that MH17 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur had been shot down.

On Thursday, the photograph had been shared more than 10,000 times on Facebook and the post went viral on Twitter.

Heartbreaking messages are posted on Pan’s Facebook wall.

“Please – this cannot be true?!” posted a friend

Another added, ‘People have been known to survive these but it doesn’t look good.’

And a lot more RIP messages soon followed.

Flight MH17 crashed over eastern Ukraine, killing its 283 passengers and 15 crew on Thursday.
