Mayawati, elephant statues get veiled for UP polls. Your Say!
The Election Commission has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to cover all the statues of Chief Minister Mayawati and elephants, the Bahujan Samaj Party's poll symbol, installed in public places across Uttar Pradesh.
The decision was taken by the EC weeks before the state assembly elections.

The idea is that no one should get political mileage. "During elections, even photos of leaders put up in offices are removed," the CEC said, along with calendars bearing names of political leaders.

The Election Commission later clarified its order, saying each and every statue of elephant and of Mayawati should be covered by 5 pm on January 11.
Statues erected across Uttar Pradesh in public places will have to be draped, said the EC, and the local authorities will have to bear the expenses of covering up the statues.
