Kashmir seethes in anger, protests worsen

Three men have lost their lives and 70 others, including 40 policemen, have been injured in the violence that has erupted in different parts of Kashmir in the wake of the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
 
Meanwhile, Chief Post Master General of Jammu and Kashmir John Samuel has clarified that the letter written by the Tihar Jail authorities to inform Afzal Guru's family about his execution reached Srinagar in the afternoon of February 9.

Guru was hanged inside Tihar Jail in a top-secret operation on the morning of February 9.

 "The letter had been booked in New Delhi on the morning of February 8. It reached Srinagar in the afternoon of February 9. The letter couldn't be delivered on February 10 as it was a Sunday. It was delivered to Guru's wife on Monday morning," John told this correspondent.

Bodies of two of the men, who were killed in the violence, were buried on Monday amid protests.
 
One of the men succumbed to the critical bullet injury he received in police firing late on Sunday at Wattergam village in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.

The body of the other, who had drowned while fleeing from the police in Sumbal town of Bandipore district on Sunday, was fished out of the river Jhelum on Monday.
 
The third youth, who had also drowned while escaping a police chase in Sumbal, was laid to rest in Batwina on Sunday night.

 However, the police claimed that the two men died after their boat capsized in Jhelum.

The valley has been under curfew since Saturday morning.

The curfew was imposed hours before the execution of Guru.

Clashes between protestors and security forces were reported from north Kashmir for the third consecutive day today.
 
More troops of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force are being sent to Srinagar to strengthen the forces already deployed there.

Security was further beefed up on Monday in view of the shutdown call given by the separatists -- coinciding with the 29th death anniversary of the founder of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Maqbool Bhat -- who was hanged in Tihar Jail on February 11, 1984.
 
 Local newspapers remained off the stands for the second day in a row today.
 
Cable TV and internet services have also remained disconnected since Saturday.
