Shopping for Eid-ul-Azha which began last week peaked on Tuesday in Jammu and Kashmir with shoppers jamming all major markets in capital Srinagar and other towns.

Since early Tuesday morning shoppers were out in strength making Eid related shopping for the festival falling on Wednesday.

Streets filled with shoppers at a Srinagar market on Tuesday

Bedecked shops selling eatables like mutton, chicken, bakery and confectionery products were almost mobbed by the people till late evening.

The business was so intense that some shops had run out of stocks early in the day.

Heavy rush was also witnessed at the sweet shops and bakeries across Srinagar on Tuesday

“We have sold all our bakery items and we have to say sorry to the latecomers,” said Mohammad Hanief, owner of a premier bakery shop in Srinagar.

Shops selling kids wear and footwear also witnessed huge rush.

There was huge rush in shops selling sacrificial goats and sheep in the city

People formed long queues at the ATMs in the city withdrawing money for the shopping.

Another area of brisk business was the sale of sheep and goat for sacrifice on the Eid day. The prices of sacrificial animals have skyrocketed this year.

The shopping spree left Srinagar roads clogged with heavy traffic making quick movement of vehicles and pedestrians almost impossible.

“Everybody is on the streets busy in shopping. We are trying our best to manage the traffic rush, but it is difficult,” said a senior police officer.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has felicitated people on Eid-ul-Azha wishing them well-being and prosperity.
