Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Saturday claimed that he has wished activist Anna Hazare a very happy new year and also wishes him a long life.

Incidentally, Singh has repeatedly hit headlines this year for making uncharitable comments about Hazare and his aides.

Talking about the Lokpal Bill, Singh claimed that the entire objective of Team Anna appeared to be very political.

"An attempt is being made to divert attention from the Sangh Parivar and focus on corruption. I only questioned the political motive behind it," he said.

Continuing his tirade against Team Anna, Singh said, "Anna Hazare is a very simple man but he has been driven into doing this by very smart people. Their whole objective was to defame the Congress".

Talking about the failure to pass the Lokpal Bill in the winter session, Singh said that Congress didn't have two thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament. Its allies also differed on certain key issues and the bill could not be passed, he said.

Targeting his favourite punching bags, Singh said, "This movement, according to me, is not a mass movement. It is driven by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. My advice to Anna is, for God's sake, get rid of all these people".

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati

Speaking on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati sacking her ministers on charges of corruption, Singh queried as to why FIRs had not been registered against the tainted ministers.

"This is not a clean-up drive but a use-and-throw policy. These ministers gave money to her and might have kept something for themselves. Rahulji has also pointed out that earlier elephants used to eat grass but nowadays they eat money," he said, referring to the Gandhi scion's campaign across UP.
