Coming soon: India's biggest mosque in Kerala

India's largest mosque is set to come up near Kozhikode in Kerala, covering an area of 12 acres on the sprawling 'Knowledge City' complex of Islamic religious and Cultural Jamia Markazu Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya.

Estimated to cost Rs 40 crore for construction, the mosque would be able to accommodate 25,000 people for prayer at a time, Markazu sources said.

The Jama Masjid in Delhi is the largest mosque in India currently.

The building alone would cover an area of 8 acres

According to Riyaz Muhammad, the Thrissur-based architect who has done the design for the mosque, the magnificent structure would be following the Mughal architectural style.

"It would strictly follow the green-building concept so that the built-up area will harmoniously blend with the greenery around", Riyaz told PTI.

While the building alone would cover an area of 8 acres, it would be surrounded by a green belt and beautiful garden of four acres, he said.

Besides the vast prayer hall, the complex would have auditorium for conducting seminars, huge library and facilities for accommodating over 1000 people at a time.

"This has been conceived as a grand mosque, which will also be one of India's important Islamic cultural centre", Markazu sources said.

Would be completed in less than 2 years

The work on the mosque would begin within five months and it would be completed in less than two years.

Located at Karanthur about 10 km from Kozhikode, Markazu is a leading Islamic centre of learning and charity, headed by religious scholar Kanthapuram A P Aboobecker Musliyar.
