The Lashkar-e-Tayiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed are planning to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, reports Vicky Nanjappa
While the Indian Mujahideen has been attempting to regroup for some time now and rebuild its Gujarat module, Pakistan-based terror groups have also increased their focus on the western state.
Police and Intelligence Bureau officials confirmed that there has been excessive activity in Gujarat with the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed planning to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi has been on the list of every terrorist organisation for some time now and intelligence agencies say they have found plans being hatched to kill him by almost every terrorist they have interrogated.
Modi is the subject matter of discussion in every school of hate run by jihadis. There are videos, text and lots of other material on him which are used during recruitments.

A series of arrests over the past couple of weeks have reinforced the terrorists' plans. While six operatives of the Indian Mujahideen who were picked up recently in a multi-state swoop spoke of the IM's plans to rebuild in Gujarat, the two Pakistani spies who were arrested this week, Karachi-based Soofia and Imran, have led to a stockpile of information.
During interrogation, the duo revealed that they were in India at the behest of the Inter Services Intelligence and their specific brief was to get as much information on Modi as possible to be used in the assassination plan.
During interrogation, Soofia and Imran pointed out that apart from the plan to murder Modi they were also asked to select and survey other targets in Gujarat as the ISI has been planning a major operation in Gujarat. However, they did not provide more information and the police feel that the extent of their brief was only limited to this.

Another factor that came to light was that the ISI was using Nepal as a launch pad for operations in Gujarat. The ISI, despite so much pressure on it, still finds the Nepal base and route the easiest to operate from.
Both Soofia and Imran were sent to Nepal from Karachi a couple of months back and then to Gujarat. They managed to get away for some time as they had no past criminal record.
The police state that the duo, however, were not sent in to assassinate the Gujarat chief minister and their job was limited to organising the logistics.

They have picked up some information but not to the extent the ISI would have expected. Moreover, they have not been able to share much of that information as they were nabbed on time, the IB and police point out.
The two of them also did not belong to any terrorist outfit but were working for the ISI which in turn would have assigned the job of execution either to the Lashkar of JeM.
The interrogation of the six Indian Mujahideen operatives has led to information that the defunct IM module in Gujarat, which was busted after the Ahmedabad blasts, was being rebuilt. They were exploring the setting up stronger modules in neighbouring states as well, to be used as a launch pad for operations in Gujarat.
