Yasin held for leading demostration on Guru's remains

April 19, 2013 20:51 IST

The police arrested Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, who led a protest march in Srinagar, on Friday.

Malik, leader of the separatist outfit Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, demanded release of detained Kashmiri separatist leaders and pressed for return of mortal remains of Kashmiri militants Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat.

Hundreds of people participated in the march and shouted anti-government slogans.

"Mortal remains of martyred Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru must be returned to their respective families, 32 separatists, who have been sentenced life imprisonment, should be pardoned and innocent youth and children, who are behind the bars should be set free," said Malik.

Guru was sent to the gallows on February 9 after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy petition in the 2001 parliament attack case. Similarly Bhat was hanged on February 11, 1984 in New Delhi jail after his conviction for two murder charges.

Both of them are buried in the Tihar jail premises.

Five gunmen stormed the heavily guarded parliament complex in New Delhi on December 13, 2001 carrying grenades, guns and explosives, but security forces killed them before they could enter the lawmakers' chamber. Ten other people, mostly security officers, were killed in the exchange of fire.
