India, Myanmar to jointly tackle insurgency

October 14, 2005 21:33 IST

India and Myanmar have agreed to further strengthen cooperation in tackling insurgency, drug trafficking and hostile elements along their borders.

The agreements were reached during the 11th round of home secretary level talks between the two countries in the Myanmar capital, Yangon.

Yangon also assured India that it would severely punish arms smugglers.

On India's request, the Myanmarese side agreed to look into the issue of release of five Indian nationals, who were arrested by its army in June this year, a Home Ministry spokesman said.

The Indian delegation was led by Union Home Secretary V K Duggal while the Myanmarese side was headed by Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Brig-Gen Phone Swe.
