We will hold further consultations on Telangana, says PM

January 19, 2011 20:15 IST

Amid the growing clamour for a separate state of Telangana, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said there would be further consultations on the issue.

"I think the home minister had a meeting with leaders of political parties from Andhra Pradesh. They had gone back and will study the report of the Srikrishna Committee. There will be further consultations," Dr Singh said while responding to queries from reporters at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

His comments came at a time when Congress Members of Parliament from Telangana region have threatened to resign from the Lok Sabha if a bill for carving a separate state out of Andhra Pradesh was not brought in the budget session of Parliament beginning in February.

Telangana has been a ticklish issue for the party which is divided over it on regional lines in the state.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had held a meeting with Congress MPs from Telangana last week and had asked them to 'co-operate'.
