At a time when the Narendra Modi-led government is trying to meet the stiff resistance from the opposition on the land bill, PM Modi addressed farmers in his Mann ki Baat radio programme.

In the sixth edition of the radio programme, Modi took the opportunity to reach out to farmers and defend the land bill.

Here are top quotes from his speech:

  • When I speak to farmers, I am speaking to the villages and their residents.

  • From the questions, I can perceive the amount of pain you are undergoing.

  • The country was ruled under laws on farmers that were introduced by the British. We have continued to be ruled under this law for over 60 years.

  • Political leaders who are today posing as your well wishers, protesting against this bill have also governed under this law.

  • We felt that there was a need to bring some amendments in the law, we only wish for welfare of people and villages.

  • If states have objection to amendments in land acquisition bill, they can continue with the old law.

  • I appeal all my farmers brothers and sisters to keep away from statements made to earn political benefits.

  • People, who sit comfortably in air conditioned rooms, have no idea about the ground reality of villages.

  • If we hadn't approved this amendment then the farmer would have continued losing land to projects with low compensation.

  • My farmer brothers, our first intention is that we use government land, then barren land and only then cultivable land.

  • I have said in Parliament, that if someone still feels some changes are required, we are willing to take up suggestions.

  • We are emphasizing on health of mother land as well, which is why we've started soil health card scheme.

  • I promise you that the government will always remain concerned about the plight of the farmers.

  • I assure you that I will make the government run to solve your issues.
