Rifles, guns and ammunition were seized from a Communist Party of India- Marxist party office, a health centre and other places in West Midnapore district on Tuesday, while the hand of a Trinamool Congress worker was chopped off allegedly by a CPI-M worker in Malda district.

In West Midnapore district, four guns and 12 rounds of ammunition were seized from a party office at Chuttargeria under Keshpur police station by the police and joint forces, police sources said. Six rifles were found under a culvert at a place under the Salboni police station, the sources said. Illegal firearms were also found hidden in the septic tank of the Salboni Health Centre. Villagers tipped off the police about the illegal firearms which were then seized after searches by the police and joint forces.

A Trinamool Congress worker Biswajit Mondal of Jalalpur in Manikchowk police station area in Malda district, had his left hand chopped off when he went to demand dues for a generator he had hired out a month ago to a CPI-M worker, police sources said. Mondal had worked for Sabitri Mitra, the current women and child development and social welfare Minister, in the assembly elections. A person identified as Kanak was arrested, the sources said.

The police said that the incident occurred out of business rivalry and had nothing to do with politics.
