May 29, 2011 18:26 IST
A Congress worker was stabbed by unidentified persons near his home while a Trinamool Congress block president narrowly escaped a bomb attack in separate incidents in Nadia district on Sunday.

The police said 34-year-old Goutam Kirtania, who is a businessman hiring out sound equipment was stabbed near his house in the jurisdiction of the Shatipur police station and left for dead, but regained consciousness and was able to reach home.

Congress-run Shantipur Municipality Chairman Ajay De alleged that the  Communist Party of India-Marxist was behind the attack. Shantipur CPI-M zonal committee secretary Shantanu Chakraborty denied the allegation. The police said that it was a result of differences in Kirtania's family and not a political attack.

In Kotowali area, under Krishnanagar-I block unidentified men hurled bombs at the Trinamool Block President Sailen Ghosh as he was returning from the house of Youth Welfare Minister Ujjwal Biswas.

Ghosh later lodged a complaint with local police alleging Democratic Yoth Federation of India members Madhab Ghosh and Surajit Ghosh and CPI-M activist Bangshi Ghosh were behind the attack. Madhab Ghosh was arrested from home while two others were absconding, police said. The police recovered an improvised fire-arm from the home of Bangshi.
