Beating Retreat ceremony, which marks the culmination of the four-day-long Republic Day celebrations, is underway at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi.
The ceremony traces its origins to the early 1950s when Major Roberts of the Indian Army developed the unique ceremony of display by the massed bands.
There are a total of 60 buglers, 17 trumpet players and 60 drummers of the army, the navy and the Indian Air Force bands along with the mass formation of bands of the Central Armed Police Forces and the Delhi Police at the Beating Retreat.
Twenty bands each of the Punjab Regiment and the Rajputana Rifles are there at the ceremony.
