American University to have an Indian centre

May 12, 2007 10:47 IST

An Indian Centre will be established at the prestigious University of Minnesota, even though the proposal for it had met some initial problems, according to a senior official.

State Representative Erik Paulsen, the man behind the initiative, said he was confident that his project would come through despite the proposed legislation for the India Centre having been vetoed by the Governor.

"The good news is I was successful in securing $150,000 in the conference committee report negotiated between the House and Senate for the Omnibus Higher Education Finance bill to fund the India Centre for one year," said Paulsen in an e-mail message, adding that the funding would need to be matched with private sector contributions.

"The bad news is that the Governor vetoed this bill for other reasons, and so I am working to regroup to make the India Centre a part of the next round for this omnibus bill. The Governor is supportive of my proposal and I will continue working hard on this initiative," he added.
