Texas man admits to hiring men to kill Indian couple

July 22, 2010 12:05 IST

A Texas man pleaded guilty on Thursday to hiring men to kill an Indian couple in Michigan in 2008.

Douglas Tobar, 42, entered the plea before Chief United States District Judge Gerald Rosen.

Since Tobar is cooperating in the case, he would be spared the death penalty or life imprisonment.

The government is recommending 20 years imprisonment for him under the terms of the plea agreement.

According to the information with the court, Tobar and co-defendant 63-year-old Indian-origin Narayan Thadani had arranged for Miguel Servando and Nelson Mendoza to travel from Texas to Michigan to murder Aasha and Brij Chhadbra.

Servando and Mendoza were later arrested by the police and a search of their vehicle had revealed a diagram and address of a Michigan home and copy of a passport picture of a woman.

Brij and Asha Chhabra were found murdered in their house.

Thadani had pleaded guilty last month and will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Thadani and Tobar are currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service.

Servando and Mendoza were charged with first degree murder and are each serving life sentences.
