7 killed by US drone in Pakistan

May 12, 2011 15:49 IST

An unmanned United States spy plane struck a vehicle in the volatile North Waziristan tribal region of Pakistan today, killing seven suspected militants.

The Central Intelligence Agency-operated drone fired two missiles at the car in Datta Khel area of the semi-autonomous tribal district, official sources were quoted as saying by TV news channels.

Local residents said they had seen drones hovering over the area after the attack, the third missile strike since US Special Forces gunned down Osama bin Laden during a raid on a compound in the garrison city of Abbottabad on May 2.

The Pakistan government has said the drone attacks are a violation of its sovereignty and counter-productive in efforts to curb militancy in the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan.
