Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday alleged the United Progressive Alliance government's credibility has gone down and internal politics of the alliance adversely affected India's foreign policy as evidenced by India's "failure" to sign a transit treaty with Bangladesh.
"It is for the time time ever that internal politics of the UPA has adversely affected India's foreign policy," said BJP leader Arun Jaitley while referring to the "failure" of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to sign a deal with Bangladesh for having a corridor through the neighbouring country for connecting to India's North-East sector.
The transit deal, which would have allowed India faster and easier access to its northeast through Bangladesh, could not be signed during Singh's visit to that country early this month after Dhaka resented the last-minute scrapping of an interim agreement on Teesta river water-sharing following West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's objections.
Jaitley charged the prime minister and the UPA chairperson of "continuing to be mute spectators and the legitimacy of the government has been eroded".
"In such a political situation, UPA's credibility has gone down and government's relations with its coalition partners have also weakened", he alleged.
Taking a dig at UPA, Jaitley said, "Today, DMK is happy that they are not alone responsible for 2G spectrum scam."
